Producation Log: Week 9

This week we finished our whole music video. We made final changes to make sure that there was nothing that was out of sync and then we uploaded our music video to YouTube. We are happy with the outcome even though the end product wasn't the same as what we have planned in our shooting script. The story in our music video is communicated clearly. It is clear the song is about a breakup. The shots in our videos are cut to the lyrics as well as we could get them. The visuals match the tone of the music.

There were no problems major problems we faced this week as most of the work was done. We just had to finish editing and upload our work. As we had a trip on Tuesday we had less time than we expected. However this was not a problem as we didn't need as much time as we thought we did.

Production Log: Week 8

This week our final deadline was extended to next week Wednesday. We uploaded all the footage we recorded during the weekend and began editing it. At the moment we only have about 40 seconds worth of blank space. We have all the footage how we want it finally and so we don't need to record anything else. We also re-filmed the burning the shots in which we burnt Theo's picture.

We were aiming to have all our footage on our track by Friday but he haven't got it all. This is because we had to rerecord a section of our footage because it was not done well when we first recorded it this weekend. We used Thursday lesson for this as Riteeka had a free period. We will have to take time after school to make up for the loss of editing time. Another problem we faced this week was final cut was not working as smoothly as it was in the past. It would not let us put in the transition we wanted to put in. In the end we decided to use a separate fade in and out rather than the cross fade.

Next week we will be working very quickly to finish the music video. On Monday we are planning to make sure there are no blank spaces left on the track. We will be using a free period on Tuesday to edit the video. And the final deadline on means that we will be using Wednesdays lesson to make the final changes before uploading the music video.

Production Log: Week 7

This week Chloe and I continued to edit our music video. We got up to 1 minute and a half of the footage edited and now has just under half of it left to do. Due to the missing footage we are behind on the amount of editing we had to get done. We managed to get all the missing footage filmed. Everything we have done this week means we are close to finishing our music video.

As we were editing we came across a few shots that need to be re-filmed which we quickly solved by filming them this weekend. Another problem we had this week was that on Wednesday I had a history trip and so I missed the lesson leaving Chloe to film. And the next lesson Chloe was absent because she had an appointment. For this reason we had to edit alone and could not consult each other on the work. However this wasn't a major problem as we both know what we want the music video to look like. We both have a copy of the shooting script ad so could work without the other. On Friday we both looked through the music video and made sure we were happy with it.

Now that we have all the footage that we need, next week we are planning to finish our music video by Friday. Because we are a little behind on our plan we will be using our free time to edit such as afterschool and free periods.

Production Log: Week 6

This week we have started our editing. We have got about a minutes video editing but we left a 15 second gap in between as we decided to change the video slightly as we were editing. While we were editing we concluded that the intro of the music video was shorter than we had wanted. we also thought that by extending the conversation the main character have in the intro the video would make a lot more sense. As a result we need to get a few different shots that we are planning to film on the re-filming days.

While editing we realised that some of the shots need re-filming such as the conversation as the words were cut off. This time we will film the whole conversation from one side and then the whole conversation from the other side. This will save a lot of time, make the conversation flow more and make the editing easier. Another thing that needs re-filming was the lip syncing. Theo did not learn the song and so while filming Chloe had to stop and start the camera a lot to tell him the lyrics. because of this the lip syncing didn't match the song and so we will re-film that.

Next week we plan to continue editing and do the re-filming on the weekend. We are planning to get most of the editing done so we only have the shots that needed re-filming left to edit. As we have still got a lot of footage left to edit we will be using time out class to get it done. We need to re-film shots 7-29 and all the lip syncing.

Production Log: Week 5

This week we started our filming. On Monday we filmed at Riteeka's with Theo. We got all the shots we had planned done for the day. These were the shots for the intro and cold opening. We got a large majority of all the shots done this week. I helped filming at Riteeka's house; however I went on holiday to Spain so could not help film the other three day. The planning we had done was affective because as a result we got almost all the filming that we had to do this week done. Now we have only two days of filming left and we will have all our filming on time. This means that we can editing our whole video now that we have all the footage we need.

We did not have any major problems with filming apart from the fact I wasn't available to film on three days. This was easily overcome as Chloe did the filming and Theo and Riteeka helped her. We could not film on Sunday as Chloe's horse was not feeling well. For this reason we will have to film those shots as soon as the horse is well.

We have one more day of filming that we will do on Sunday. Next week we on Wednesday we look back on all our footage and see if there is anything that needs to be re-filmed. We will also start our editing.

Production Log: Week 4

This week we worked on the blogs that we haven't completed for our pre production. Chloe and I both completed our production scheduled and decided where to film on what day. Making a production scheduled helps us plan when and were we should film. This ensures we get all the footage we need. We got our cast waivers signed by both Riteeka and Theo. As they will be staring in our music video we needed to get written consent that we could film them and upload the footage. Once we had sorted out our production scheduled we made call sheets. This will let each of the actors know when were need to be filming and what time. We posted our location reccies. Location reccies where important to justify why we chose the locations we did. This made us think about the significance of each location and why it is important for our music video.  We completed risk assessment which was really important as we have to stay safe and be aware of the different hazards in each of our locations. We posted a blog explaining our job roles and responsibility in our partnership. We both wrote down everything that was important about our jobs. I am the camera operator and editor. Chloe is the director and producer.  We got written permission from Riteeka to film at her house and posted a blog of it also explaining why we didn't need permission to film in the 4 other locations. This fit with the rest of our work as before we can start filming in a location we need permission for legal reasons. If we film without consent we can have our video taken off the internet.

We did not have many problems this week as the work we did was very straight forward. We however did not get a chance to film this week as we had not finished our paperwork and uploaded it to blogger. We solved this problem as when we made our production scheduled we started our filming on the weekend.

We plan to get all the filming done during the half term holidays next week.

Permissions To Film

We are filming our music video in 5 different locations; the skate park, Hainault forest, Jarrow road, the stables, and at Riteeka's house and in her garden.

To film at the skate park on the South Bank will not require permission as it is a public. Many people film their stunts at the skate park and put them online.

Likewise, Hainault forest and Jarrow road are both public places and so again we don't need permission to film. Hainault forest is an place people can take pictures and videos of wildlife such as ducks and birds. Jarrow road is a road with verious houses and is fully open to do what you like as long as its legal

Another location we have chosen to film at is the stables. This too does not require any permission to film in as it is an open area to people who pay rent. Chloe owns a horse and so pays to keep her horse there.

The last location is Riteeka's house. Riteeka has given us permission to use her house for filming. We are planning to burn pictures and break glass in her house and so we have her written consent to do so.

Location Reccies

Our 5 location that we will be using in our music video are Riteeka's house, South bank in London, Jarrow road, the stables, and Hainault forest.

Riteeka's house is personal property and so we have her permission to use it for filming. The reason we have chosen to film at Riteeka's house is because we need a house to film at in our music video. Riteeka's the actress in the video and her kitchen and garden are suitable places to film in. Breaking glass on tiled floor is more dramatic.

The skate park has a lot of graffiti on the walls and it has a more relatable vibe. The music video is set in London and that's what London looks like. Its also a contrast to the forest which represents their relationship. Their personalities contrast which is shown in the song.
The reason we chose the south bank was because it has the kind of look we were going for. Jarrow road could be replaced for any road in London but we chose Jarrow road because it is the most convenient for our filming.

Hainault Forest is also the most convenient place for filming. all the places are easy to film in as they don't need permission to film in. this will minimize problems while we are filming. We decided to film at a forest as it is where the character enjoys spending her time.

We chose the stables to film in because it goes with the indie theme of the song and its genre. It shows the character personality as she like nature and animals. The use of a shot with the horse at the stables is useful as the male character is remembering her as she was with him.

Waiver for Cast

Job Roles and Responsibilities

In our partnership I am the camera operator and the editor. The reason for this is that I'm used to using a camera as filming and photography is a hobby of mine. I am responsible for a number of things as the camera operator and the editor.
some of my responsibilities include:
- Camera equipment:
I am responsible for making sure that the camera equipment is not damaged or stolen.

- SD card:
I need to keep the SD card on me as I need it for both my jobs. I need to record the footage and keep it on the SD card and I need that footage while I'm editing the music video. If I loose the SD card or forget it I will not be able to film or editing the video.

- Good quality of footage:
It is my job to make sure that the footage I record is good. It needs to match the shooting script. I need to make sure that I can work with the footage I record. If the footage is bad the whole music video will look bad too

- Make sure the lip syncing matches the song:
Making sure the lip syncing matches the song is important as our music video had numerous shots in which lip syncing plays a part so it will look really bad if it is not done well. As I am on the camera I need to watch if the lip syncing is accurate without sound.

- Keeping the pace of the song matched to the editing:
As the editor it is my responsibility to make sure the sound and video are in sync too. If the editing is too faced for the song it will be very distracting. likewise if the editing is too slow then the the music video will drag.

Chloe is the director and producer. The original idea for our music video is Chloe's and she knows what she wants it to look like better than me.

Production Schedule

This is our production schedule in which we plan to stick to when it comes to recording and editing. We chose to get all of the recording done during the holidays which is from the 15/02/2015-22/02/2015 so by time we come back to school, we can get straight on to editing. Once we have edited all of the footage together in which we recorded, we can go through it and see if there is any footage that we missed. In this case, we have set days in which we can go out and record any extra footage which we didn't pick up yet has to be done by the recording deadline which is the 25/02.2015. I have put in set dates to do the recording which is over the weekend so that it wont clash with any work which has to be done during school times and it would be better ans if we have to go back up to London, it would be light out still where as around 4pm-5pm it gets darker so we wouldn't have much light. The editing deadline is 13/03/2015 as we would have plenty of time to go through the video and match it up to the music and timings. We would also have enough time to keep progressing it to make it look better as a whole.

Producation Log: Week 3

This week we finished off our shooting script. This will make it easier for us to work on our shooting scheduled and help us film the shots for our music video. We spoke about our production scheduled too and about the different shots that could be lived on each day. Previously we didn't have a clear location as to where we would film in a forest for some of our shots but now we have decided to film at Hainault forest. This is a good location as it is only half an hour away from School.

There wasn't major problems this week however we had to work extra hard to make up for days I missed. While we were planning out the shooting script we realised that our song was only 2 and a half minutes and so we had to make the music video longer by adding a cold opening. This also helped with making our narrative more clearer. another problem that having a short song caused was that we weren't able to make our target of 100 shots. We decided to do about 80 shots instead. Our song is quite slow paced so it will not be boring. This week we also missed one lesson as we had a trip which put us a lesson behind on where we would have liked to be by the end of the week. We dealt with this by taking time out of lesson to finish the shooting script.

Next week we are planning to use the first lesson to make a production scheduled and the next to work on our risk assessment. We still need to get our waivers for cast, location reccies, and call sheet done but we are planning to do that out of lesson as they shouldn't take too long to do. We are also planning to start filming Thursday.

Production Log: Week 2

This week we worked on our shooting scripts for our music video. I helped plan out our music video and contributed ideas for shots while we were planning. Chloe has started working on our shooting script and has completed over 40 shots so far. By working on our scripts we are deciding what we have to film. This will make it easier to make a production scheduled. Also our shooting scripts give us an indication as to how long our music video will be and if it is not long enough or too short we need to change the number of shots. The script also allows us to have a detailed plan of our music video.

A problem we faced this week was that I have had a flu so only attended one of the four lesson we had this week. As a result Chloe was left with the majority of the work. The way we will overcome this problem is by making sure that we get all the work done next week.

Next week I plan to give media extra time so that I can make up for the time I have missed and help finish the shooting scripts. We plan to do over 100 shots for our music video and so we need to plan the shots next week.

Music Video Techniques

Number of Cuts:
An example of a large number of cuts used well is Katy Perry's Hot N Cold music video. Using a large number of cuts in a music video is a good thing because it makes the video more interesting. adding to that is having the cuts the shots in different locations. In Hot N Cold met the intended affect as the audience want to watch more. watching a long shot will get boring as you'd be watching the same thing for a very long time. An example of where cuts is used badly is Little Things by One Direction. There are numerous long shots in the video and the pace is quite slow. The intended affect of the video is to present One Direction as a humble simplistic boy band. The institution achieved their goal but the music video is quite boring not only because of the lack of cuts but the shots are in black and white. One Direction's fan base are teenage girls and so the video would appeal to them as the video presents the band as innocent lad working hard on their music to please their fans.

Special effects:
One Directions music video for You and I is a good example of well used special effects. From 2:47 the band walk in to freeze frames. The intended affect of this special effect is to do something different and more interesting. Although the technique has been successful the effects done come until over 2 minutes in to the video. Before that there is very long shots making the beginning quite boring. The video would appeal to their audience as the band are just having fun making music. An example of bad special effects is 90s music by Kimbra. Throughout the video the special effect look fake. At 1:26 you see starts that shine out which although it looks cool but its obvious it's not real.

Cutting to the beat:
A good example of cutting to the beat is Alexdandra Stan's Mr Saxobeat. Cutting to the beat is a good technique in fast paced like at 0:22 music because the shots change fast making the video more interesting. Gold Forever by The Wanted is a music video in which they don't cut to a beat. The first cut is at 2:05 and this is one of the only cuts in the music video. Throughout the video the camera is following the guys around as various random things are happening. Having little cuts can make the music video boring but this song was purposely made funny as it was made for comic relief.

Varied camera language:
Tick Tock by Kesha uses a range of camera language which help to amplify the lyrics and the mood of the song. for example at 0:40 a high angle is used at the word "tipsy" which shows she's high. At 1:08 there is a pan which is fast paced. This makes it more interesting and people want to watch the music video. Another Love by Tom Odell is a music video in which it appears that it was only filmed in one shot. Throughout the video there is only a straight on shot of Tom Odell lip synching and the camera is zooming out. At 3:53 the is another close up of Tom's face in which you can clearly see his emotions. Not using a range of different camera language can make the music video seem long and boring.

Green screen:
Using green screen in videos is good for the institution as they don't have to use read location or even spend a lot of the set. Black Widow by Iggy Azalea uses a lot of green screen. The backgrounds that are used are beautiful and look cool. At 3:36 the shot is colourful and interesting making it appealing to the audience. Using green screen well is quite creative as it looks good and it entertaining to watch. Technotronic's music video for Pump Up the Beat is an example of bad green screen. You can clearly see the shadow on the green screen at 1:08 which makes it obvious that a green screen was used.

Lip Syncing:
The artist is able to preform and dance in the video without having to worry about singing too. Bad lip syncing can make people not want to watch the artist live as they think their music is auto-tuned as the artist is not singing. Heart attack by Demi Lovato is a good example of this. At 0:19 you can see her lips are sync with the song. It looks like Demi is singing herself. An example of bad Lip Syncing is Wannabe by the Spice Girls. At 1:06 you can see the artist's lip syncing is way off. Bad lip syncing can distract the audience from the music video as it is clear that the artist or actor is not actually singing. This also make it look like the artist can't sing and perform at the same time.

My Artist's Identity

My Artist
Josh Woodward

www.joshwoodward.com

The song is called Golden sunrise and it is a pop country song however the artist focus's mainly on acoustic, pop, and rock music. Josh Woodward is from Ann Arbour in Michigan in the USA. His age is not specified on his website but he looks like he is in his late to mid 20s. Woodward wants to be able to provide free music to people and so has given creative commons for us to use and download his music for free.

My Actor
Eoin will be playing my the main character in my music video. The costume for my actor to wear will be quite plain and conventional for example leather boots and belt, cowboy hat and plaid shirts. I have chosen to use Billy Ray Cyrus as a style icon for my the costume as he has a cowboy look but is casual.

Golden Sunrise By Josh Woodward (Lyrics)

The song I have chosen to do is Golden Sunrise by Josh Woodward. www.joshwoodward.com

Golden Sunrise lyrics
Sheltered from the sunlight
In the shade beneath the tree
We hide behind the shadows
Like an orphaned refuge

The apple tree of knowledge
Shed its fruit along the way
The injury is fading but the
hungers here to stay
until the day that there’s no memory
of what we used to be

golden sunrise
close your eyes
found your dark skies
made you blind

the heads all
turn the darkness
when the sun engulfs the sky
the brightness overwhelming
to the unadjusted eye

we’re taught to follow blindly
like there’s nothing here to see
the slave to some philosophy
will somehow make you free
then you will be so gladly handcuffed
enlightened from above

golden sunrise
close your eyes
found your dark skies
made you blind

with ignorance or virtue
question is a sin
is there no remedy
for the state that we are in?
with knowledge
it like an old disease
we wont be awake to see that we are free

golden sunrise
close your eyes
found your dark skies
made you blind

another day of darkness for the ones that have seen the light
broken eyes are shining in the darkness of the night
never see the beauty of the world as it is

The song is about how ignorance is bliss. There is a deeper meaning to the song. I think the artist is saying that a greater power is hiding the truth from us and we are taught to follow a crowd. If we break away from the crowd then we are in danger. The sunlight can be seen as knowledge, People are not allowed to question. Life is happier without them having the knowledge of the truth. They're not allowed to see the truth and if they do they are forced to stay away.

$99 Music Video

99dollarmusicvideo.com is a YouTube channel that post music videos made with under $99. They want to showcase "music videos from todays best independent bands and up-and-coming filmmakers, all made with a budget of under $99" On their music channel you see a lot of acoustics music. An example of this music video at 0:54 you see a guitar.
There is a lot of creative control as you see a rang of different type of music videos. The artist can make their music video how they want and be as different or similar as they want. The audience can participate through the comment section on YouTube. The audience have the ability to give their feedback and telling the artists what they liked and did not like about the music videos. It can also be used to give feedback to the artist and tell them how they can improve their videos.

I don't think it is possible to produce a profession quality music video in under $99 as professional music videos are shot in HD which is quite expensive to produce. Although you would be able to come up with a professional idea for the music video which has the ability to be made in to a professional music video without professional equipment it is impossible. Also professional editing software, location, costume, make up, and lighting are factors that professional music video budgets are spent on.

Permission For Song

I did not need permission from the artist as he has given creative commons. I have permission to use his music as I want for free.

Production Log: Week 1

This week we decided who we will be working with and what video we will be doing. We also made a basic plan for the our music video. Chloe and I are working on her music video idea called sweetheart by Robert Staines.

We decided on an idea with this the start of the process to produce a music video. We took Chloe's idea's and developed them further to create a basic music video. Looking at the Lyrics we came up with the different shots and scenes we will use in the music video. We spoke about where we would film the shots for example we will be filming the first two shots at Riteeka's house in which we will have her breaking glass in one shot which will be illustrating the lyrics. In the second shot which will be shot in her garden she will be burning a picture of Theo. The reason we decided to do this shot in the garden was because we didn't want to burn anything in her house. We realised we will need two or more pictures of Theo to burn as we will have to take one shot from Riteeka's point of view and another in which you can see her.

There weren't any major problems this week as we didn't do much however Chloe was absent during the lesson in which we decided what music video we will be doing. This was sorted easily as we recorded our video in which we spoke about why we became partners and the music video we will be doing during the following lesson. This also meant we had to work quickly to come up with our plan for the music video. We got it done within the lesson so we did not fall behind.

Next week we will be working on our shooting script.

Pitch Reflection

Are there any areas of the presentation you would like to give more detail on?
I didn't give much detail on my crew which will consist of Me and my partner who will be working together to direct and edit. Sanjeet is good at make up and costume designing so she will be helping with that. The reason I have chosen to use green screen is because living in England its never sunny and so to create the right scene I would have to use a green screen. I will include performance in my music video because in a country music video you normally get people playing acoustic instruments and so I will include a shot of someone playing a guitar. Also by adding performance it will make the music video more interesting. In my music video I will be using Goodwin's theory of illustration and contradiction. Illustration will amplify my lyrics and will allow me to tell the story I have interpretative from the lyrics. The lyrics contradict each other and so by using contradiction I can further amplify the lyrics. Also the negative and positive imagery in the lyrics will be put forward for the audience to see.

What did the audience identify as the strength of your music video idea?
One strength of my music video was the idea. My idea was very creative; I came up with a story in that is not very common. My idea is thought provoking. The song I chose has strong imagery that I will pick up on. Another strength of my music video is that it is practical to shoot and has a practical budget. The locations I have chosen are local so are easily accessible. another practicality of local locations is that they don't require money for travelling to. You will only need an oyster card that has free bus travel. The only money I will be spending to produce my music video is on costume. although most of the costume is commonly found in a guys wardrobe I will have to buy a cowboy hat.

What did the audience identify as the areas of improvement?
An area in which I can improve my music video is buy giving it a specific genre rather than a general one. I need to focus on my target audience. Although my song is pop country the audience is very broad and so there is a risk that there will not be no audience for my music video. similarly another issue with my music video is that the shots will be filmed in London which is not a typical thing in a country music video.

What changes will you make to your music video concept based on the feedback you received?
As a result of my feedback I have changed my target audience. My target audience are people who live in the country. Their age range is around 18-25 as the song is thought provoking and would require a level of maturity.
